Turkey Trot Events in Birmingham: 2023 Edition
There are so many things to get excited about during the holidays—more delicious food than you can possibly eat, Christmas lights popping up all over town, and of course, the spirit of holiday cheer.
One of our favorite things about the holidays is the weather. For a few months, we get to say goodbye to the sweltering summer heat, and enjoy a temperate Alabama winter that’s perfect for all kinds of outdoor activities, including running. Don’t laugh, it’s a good way to offset all those extra Turkey Day calories!

UAB Veteran’s Day 5K
When: Saturday, November 11th at 8:00AM
Where: UAB Mini Park, 800 13th Street South, Birmingham, AL 35294
Price: $15 for veterans and students, $30 for general admission (free for children 12 and under)
Why wait for Thanksgiving? University of Alabama at Birmingham is honoring our armed forces with a casual 5K walk that’s perfect for people of all ages—this all-inclusive event is open to absolutely everyone, including wheelchair racers and parents pushing strollers.
It may not technically be a Thanksgiving event near you, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t anything to be thankful for. The event directly funds the UAB Veteran Relief Fund, which aids with housing, medical care, and whole lot more. Come out for the 105th anniversary of Armistice Day and beat feet for a great cause!
Magic City Half Marathon & 5K
When: Sunday, November 19th at 8:00AM
Where: Regions Field, 1401 1st Avenue South, Birmingham, AL 35233
Price: $125 for the half marathon, $40 for the 5K, $20 for the mile run
With a 1-mile, 5-kilometer, and half marathon, this run has something for people of all fitness levels. It’s the second largest event of its kind in the entire state, and proceeds go to the Ruben Studdard Foundation for the Advancement of Children in the Music Arts, and Girls on the Run of Birmingham. The finish line is situated right at the Birmingham Barons’ home plate, and post-race beer on the concourse will be provided.
If you’re going as a duo, this year they even have a 26.2-mile tag team event. Come and set a new personal record!
Turkey Trot at the Junction
When: Thursday, November 23rd at 8:00AM
Where: Ensley Health Club, 2000 Avenue D, Birmingham, AL 35218
Price: $30
This is the organization’s first time hosting this event, but the route has been a classic staple of B-Ham runs for years now. If you’re looking for an affordable, no-frills Thanksgiving 5K near you, this is it!
St. Catherine’s Turkey Trot For Hunger 5K
When: Thursday, November 23rd at 7:30AM
Where: Chelsea Recreational Park, 2966 County Road 39, Chelsea, AL 35043
Price: $15 before Nov. 9th, $20 After Nov. 9th
This is sure to be one of the best turkey trots near you this year, and also one of the cheapest, even if you miss the early sign-up deadline. It’s held bright and early, rain or shine in beautiful Chelsea Recreational Park, only about 30 minutes outside of downtown Birmingham.
Funds will go toward the church’s Beans and Rice Food Pantry, which aids hungry families all over the community. If you’re really in the holiday spirit, be sure to check out their multiple donation tiers!
The Sam Lapidus Montclair Run
When: Thursday, November 23rd at 8:30AM
Where: Levite Jewish Community Center, 3960 Montclair Road, Birmingham, AL 35213
Price: $45 for the 5K and 10K, $18 for the 1-mile Fun Run
First founded back in 1976 as simply the Montclair Run, this regionally-famous Thanksgiving activity near you was renamed to honor a local 14-year-old boy who lost his battle with Ewing’s Sarcoma back in ‘08. To date, with the help of participants from across the state, the LJCC has raised over $10,000 toward the fight against childhood cancers.
Five dollars of each registration is sent directly to Alabama Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Disorders, and with around 1,500 runners expected to participate, the numbers speak for themselves!
