2026 Hyundai Palisade rear hatch open with Halloween gear at a Birmingham fall event, October dusk

Birmingham's October calendar runs from a daytime zoo festival the kids will beg to repeat, all the way to an after-dark haunted experience in Bessemer that has grown adults rethinking their bravery. The right Hyundai makes each of those nights easier. We mean more than transportation. It handles the costumes, the group, the parking situation, and the drive home at 10 p.m. when everyone's sugar-crashed.

The Palisade is the one we keep pointing big groups toward this time of year. We'll explain why, and where the smaller models earn their keep.

What's the Plan at a Glance?

Hoots & Howls at the Birmingham Zoo Is a Daytime Costume Showcase

Hoots & Howls suits families with younger kids more than any other crowd, though the format is loose enough that almost anyone can enjoy it. The Birmingham Zoo runs the event on the last three weekends of October, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., costumes actively encouraged, and the trick-or-treat trail comes included with admission. Parking in the lot off Cahaba Road is free, a detail worth knowing before you're circling the block with a toddler in a dragon costume arguing about nap time.

Expect a gear-heavy outing. A stroller, a diaper bag, a costume change for the three-year-old who melts down about the bat wings by noon, snacks, and everything you packed for a post-zoo lunch add up to a real cargo conversation. The Tucson handles it well. Hyundai lists 38.7 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats, with 41.3 inches of rear legroom for kids who need to sit in a full princess gown without crinkling it. It seats five, which works perfectly for the classic two-adults-plus-kids configuration.

Add grandparents or the neighbor family, though, and that math shifts fast. The Palisade seats up to eight with its standard second-row bench and carries 19.1 cubic feet behind the third row, expanding to 46.3 cubic feet with that row folded. For a group, there's no real competition in the lineup.

Insider note: The Cahaba Road lot fills quickly on Saturday mornings during Hoots & Howls. Groups heading to the Zoo in multiple cars often wish they'd taken one. An eight-passenger Palisade means one vehicle, one parking spot, and nobody arguing about whose car has the aux cord.

FearFest in Bessemer Rewards a Vehicle That Handles the Drive

FearFest rewards a vehicle built for the drive, because you're covering real highway miles after dark and you'll want the ride comfortable in both directions. Alabama Adventure sits in Bessemer, about 20 miles from downtown Birmingham on I-20/59 West. FearFest runs Friday and Saturday evenings from 6 to 10 p.m., Sunday evenings from 6 to 9 p.m., October 3 through November 1. Two haunted houses, two haunted trails, roaming scare actors, rides after dark. It ranks as the most intense Halloween experience in the metro area this season.

Driving matters for this one. You're heading out at dusk and coming back well after dark, often with a car full of people who've just survived a haunted trail and are still loud about it. The Santa Fe is a natural fit here. Seven passengers, a comfortable highway ride, and enough interior space that a group of adults doesn't feel like origami for a 45-minute round trip. The surface lot at Alabama Adventure is generous, so footprint is no concern.

The Kona earns its place for a couple or a small group. The EPA rates the 2026 Kona's base 2.0-liter front-wheel-drive configuration at 31 mpg combined, which adds up on a 40-mile round trip after dark. Parking at Alabama Adventure never turns into a maneuvering drama with it.

Halloween in the Heights and Tannehill Call for Different Thinking

Halloween in the Heights and Tannehill pull in opposite directions, so the smart pick depends on whether you're squeezing into a neighborhood or spreading out across open park grounds. Cahaba Heights on October 24 ranks among the most genuinely local Halloween experiences in Birmingham. Businesses along the Heights corridor hand out treats all day, and the Witches Ride draws a crowd that makes street parking tight by midday. A smaller footprint earns real points here. The Kona, at 171.3 inches long, slips into gaps a larger SUV can't. You're parallel parking on a residential side street, not pulling into a structured lot, and that works in your favor.

Tannehill Ironworks Historical State Park in McCalla runs its Halloween Fairyland on October 31. More than 200 trick-or-treat stops spread across the park grounds, plus moonwalks and an open-air atmosphere that's hard to replicate elsewhere in the metro. The grounds parking is wide and easy. What matters here is cargo. You're potentially loading a wagon for younger kids, a costume bin, snacks for the I-459 drive out, and everything that gets added to the list at the last minute. The Tucson Hybrid carries the same 38.7 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats as the standard Tucson and reaches Tannehill on considerably less fuel. For a family making two or three of these October runs, the fuel savings compound.

Next step: Count heads. That single number, whether you need five seats or eight, narrows the Hyundai lineup to one or two obvious choices faster than any other factor. Give us a call at (205) 502-2792 or stop by the lot on 5th Ave N and we'll pull up exactly what we have.

Match Your Night to the Right Hyundai

Matching the night to the model comes down to one honest tradeoff we walk people through on the lot, and it cuts both ways depending on your crew. The Palisade is the right tool for Hoots & Howls with an extended family group, though it's more vehicle than a couple needs for a Friday FearFest run to Bessemer. The Kona is ideal for navigating the Heights neighborhood and the interstate drive to Alabama Adventure, but with five adults in Halloween costumes, the rear legroom conversation becomes real. Neither answer is wrong. It depends entirely on who's in your car.

When a Birmingham family maps out October, one spec keeps earning its keep. The Palisade's maximum cargo capacity of 86.7 cubic feet (both rear rows folded flat, per Hyundai's published specifications for the 2026 model) shows up when someone needs to transport a costume, a folding wagon, a stroller, and three bags of candy. No other vehicle in our lineup touches that number.

October in Birmingham runs warm into mid-month and cools quickly toward Halloween. Whatever you're driving, you'll likely want the climate running on the way there and the heat running on the way back. Plan for both.
